Tom Osbourne – Location Assistant (Q&A for #careerdevelopmentmonth)

As part of November’s Career Development Month we have spoken to a number of our “Green Room” crew whom are part of Location Routes. This week we spoke to Tom Osbourne whom is releatively new to the industry but has gained experience on a number of productions over the past year.

1) Tell us about how you got into the Locations or Production Department?

While researching the industry, I came across the Locations department and immediately knew it was the perfect fit for me. I found it fascinating to visualize how a location could come to life on screen. My background in Photography and Logistics provided a solid foundation to understand the day-to-day tasks and challenges of the Locations department.

2) What is your biggest achievements and challenges to date so far in your career?

My biggest achievement and challenge came during the same production—a major feature film shot across the south of England. It was my first scouting role, and I felt immense pride when several locations I had scouted were chosen by the producers and director. Once filming began, I took on the role of Assistant Location Coordinator to support the part-time Coordinator. This position gave me invaluable insight into the complexities of on-set logistics, especially dealing with contracts and other operational hurdles. The most demanding aspect of this project was managing over 45 locations across London in just eight weeks, along with the unforeseen challenges that arose during filming.

3) How did you hear about Location Routes?

I first heard about Location Routes while researching the department, even before I had any industry contacts.

4) What support has Location Routes been able to give you over the past year?

Location Routes has been a tremendous resource for my growth in this field. From attending their insightful training day in the summer to working as Oli’s Location Assistant on a TV pilot, I’ve gained practical skills and valuable experience. The Location Routes community, particularly the group chats, has also provided me with a supportive network of like-minded professionals.

5) What are your future aspirations for your career in Locations or Production Department?

While I don’t have a definitive long-term plan yet, I am confident that Locations is the right path for me. My goal is to continue growing within the department, climbing the ladder, and eventually becoming a respected name in the industry.

Thanks Tom for your insight and continue to grow within the department.
